Media Literacy

I just finished reading the article, Why digital Natives Need Help with Technology?

The article talked about the false assumption of children being technologically advanced, The article goes onto say that simply because a child is exposed to technology constantly doesn't mean they know how to use it effectively. Actually if answers take a long time or the information isn't readily available, then most students give up.This is the main reason these critical thinking skills need to be taught at school, so children can know how to best use this readily available tool.

Discussion Questions:
  1. Do you think that students are learning critical thinking skills in partnership with figuring out how to use computers?
  2. Do you think most children use their computers in ways that enhance their education?
  3. When should these critical computer skills be taught?

In what ways have you incorporated information and media literacy into your classroom?
I .I work with Pre-K, so I have worked with the children on figuring out if something is true or false. We also work hard on figuring out whether something is conveying true and factual information to us or if its advertising.
Do you think there needs to be explicit instruction on information and media literacy or is It accomplished within a more holistic teaching style sufficiently?
2. I do think there should be something that deals with media literacy at every age level that you have computer available for children to use. How that could be conveyed can be left up to the teacher.
What limits are there to following national or even state standards of literacy in all schools?
3. Money and time, to set these standards someone would have to make sure this is a reachable goal for all schools whether they are in rural Oregon or Saipan.
Have you ever been mandated to incorporate information and media literacy into your lessons? In what ways?
No I haven't, mostly because the children I teach are pretty young, but I can see that it would be effective if used in a methodical and well thought out way.
